Exploring how polar animals stay warm

In our small groups this week, we studied how polar animals stay warm.  We learned that they have an extra layer of fat under their skin called blubber.  We had a bowl of water filled with ice and talked about ice sinking or floating and how you can only see the top of the ice.  This is just like icebergs.  We then put our unprotected hands in the water to see how cold it was.  Then we took turns putting our hand in a bag filled with shortening to simulate blubber.  We found that the water wasn't very cold anymore!  Here are some pictures to enjoy.

Classroom News
This week we focused on Polar animals.  We discussed the North and South poles, icebergs, kinds of polar animals and how they live, sang penguin songs, sorted “ice” pieces, built igloos, made a penguin, read Tacky the Penguin, and acted like a penguin or seal and tried fish with no hands!  In our small groups we watched a video about the Arctic and read our Weekly Reader, glued and cut an igloo with squares, and explored how and animals stay warm with blubber.  We have been able to go outside lately so please make sure your child has everything they need every day.  It is helpful to have the items labeled as well.  Thanks!
